Prevention Research

Data collection from participants in the AUS2PREVENT trial has concluded and the extensive data analysis is currently in progress and is due for completion by December 2025. The cost-benefit analysis will inform the Association and our stakeholders (including Preventive Health SA) whether the health benefits of the AUS2PREVENT program are greater than the costs associated with preventive interventions (i.e. ‘Usual care’) currently being provided by General Practitioners. This information will also Diabetes SA and our strategic partners whether the program is scalable for the state and enable cost savings for the health system.
Through an election commitment in 2022, the South Australian Government committed to creating a new and independent prevention agency, with a mandate to develop evidence-based programs and policies to keep South Australians healthy.
In February 2024, Preventive Health SA was established, strengthening the prevention agenda in South Australia through the consolidation of key prevention functions in a single agency including obesity, tobacco, vaping, mental health, suicide prevention, alcohol and other drugs, and the determinants of health as priority areas.
In addition, the South Australian Government approved the drafting of a Bill to enshrine the agency in legislation and give perpetuity to preventive health in South Australia. Diabetes SA was one of many organisations who was invited to provide feedback on the draft Bill. On November 28, the Preventive Health SA Bill 2024 was passed by the South Australian Parliament to drive the preventive health agenda for good in South Australia and ensure healthier South Australians across generations.
Preventive Health SA and the Government of South Australia are a valued strategic partner of Diabetes SA and we are currently working together to reduce the incidence and impact of type 2 diabetes among priority populations in South Australia.
