Statement from Diabetes SA on recent media coverage
In-line with other peak bodies around the country, Diabetes SA is aware of recent media coverage raising concerns over diabetes technology.
We understand that these reports may cause concern for people living with diabetes and their families. We want to reassure our community that diabetes technologies such as continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) and insulin pumps have transformed the lives of many people living with diabetes and continue to play a vital role in supporting them in their diabetes management.
“Use of technology including continuous glucose monitors and insulin pumps is well established in Australian and international guidelines for diabetes management. Technology should be offered and individualised in people with diabetes, in discussion with your treating medical team. Before making any changes to your treatment plan please ensure you discuss it with your doctor.” Endocrinologist Dr Linda Watson.
CGMs and insulin pumps can provide significant health benefits, including improving glucose management, reduce the risk of severe hypoglycaemia and supporting people to live longer, healthier lives.
“Diabetes SA remains committed to supporting equitable access to diabetes technologies for all South Australians who could benefit from them. We also continue to advocate for improved affordability and access, so that cost is not a barrier to diabetes management” said Catherine Hughes, CEO Diabetes SA.
If you have any concerns with the function of a device or about whether diabetes technology is still right for you or your family member, we encourage you to speak with your Endocrinologist, GP, Diabetes Educator or contact your device manufacturer for advice and support.
