Know your type 2 diabetes risk

Over the last 20 years, the prevalence of diabetes has increased by 220% and the greatest increases have been for type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes (gestational diabetes being a risk factor for the development of type 2 diabetes).

In South Australia, Type 2 diabetes accounts for 88% of all diabetes cases and concerningly, it is estimated that every adult diagnosed with the condition another one remains undiagnosed.

Further, gestational diabetes accounts for almost 3% all diabetes in South Australia.

A delayed diagnosis of gestational or type 2 diabetes leads to higher rates of diabetes-related complications and a higher risk of hospitalisation, placing immense burden on the individual living with the condition and it also affects carers, families, the community and the Australian health system.
