Early detection of type 2 diabetes

Type 1 diabetes cannot currently be prevented. However, international and national research is actively exploring the causes of, and cure for, this condition. Organisations like Breakthrough T1D™ (Formerly JDRF) are funding and supporting the ‘Type1Screen’ research which looks for diabetes-related autoantibodies because they are early markers of the autoimmune process that attacks the pancreas to cause type 1 diabetes. On the other hand, Type 2 diabetes which is the most common form of diabetes, can be prevented or at least delayed by making some changes to risk factors that are related to our lifestyle. However, we understand that making changes to our lifestyle is not easy and that’s why Diabetes SA is committed to supporting the 180,000 plus South Australians (~16% of our adult population) to the reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes through the development and delivery behavioural change programs and services.
