Pre-Budget Submission 2025-2026

In November 2024, Diabetes SA submitted Diabetes SA’s South Australian Pre-Budget Submission for 2025-2026 to State Government.

This submission was aimed at securing funding for a targeted project focused on type 2 diabetes awareness and screening within high-risk Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) communities. This initiative is crucial as it addresses the disproportionate and rising prevalence of type 2 diabetes among these populations, which now represent approximately 25% of South Australia’s population.

The Urgent Issue

Type 2 diabetes is a significant and growing health challenge, particularly within CALD communities. These communities face higher prevalence rates compared to the Australian-born population, with some groups experiencing rates as high as 17%. Many individuals within these communities remain undiagnosed, leading to severe health complications and increased hospitalisations. Barriers such as language, health literacy, and cultural stigmas further exacerbate the issue, making it essential to provide culturally appropriate healthcare and support.

Our Proposal

The project aims to:

  • Conduct screening events in high-risk communities.
  • Provide culturally appropriate education on diabetes.
  • Foster trust between healthcare professionals and CALD communities.
  • Continuously evaluate the project for improvement and scale.

Expected Outcomes

We expect to:

  • Strengthen relationships between healthcare providers and CALD communities.
  • Reduce health complications through early detection.
  • Promote health equity and long-term behavioural change.
  • Achieve significant cost savings in healthcare.

Securing this funding is not just an investment in the health of South Australia’s culturally and linguistically diverse communities but a commitment to a healthier, more equitable future for all. With the support of the Government, key stakeholders and the community, we can significantly reduce the burden of type 2 diabetes and improve the quality of life for many South Australians.
