Our team of experienced health professionals are amongst the foremost experts in diabetes in South Australia. Whether you’re at risk, newly diagnosed, or have been living with diabetes for many years, contact Diabetes SA for individualised education and support to achieve your goals.

We offer one-on-one consultations with Credentialled Diabetes Educators, Accredited Practising Dietitians and an Accredited Exercise Physiologist.

Telehealth appointments also available.

A Credentialled Diabetes Educator supports you to:

  • Learn skills and knowledge to manage and live well with diabetes
  • Monitor and manage glucose levels
  • Manage highs and lows
  • Use diabetes technology i.e., meters, continuous and flash glucose monitoring and insulin pumps
  • Understand medications
  • Get started with insulin
  • Reduce your risk of complications
  • Understand your annual cycle of care

For people at risk of type 2 diabetes or with pre-diabetes:

  • Prevent or delay progression to type 2 diabetes

An Accredited Practising Dietitian supports you to:

  • Learn how the food you eat impacts your diabetes
  • Avoid and manage hypo and hyperglycaemia
  • Count carbohydrates and read labels
  • Match food intake with insulin or other medications
  • Adopt special eating patterns e.g. plant based, Mediterranean, low carbohydrate, allergies or intolerances
  • Implement dietary strategies to assist with other health conditions e.g. cholesterol, blood pressure, coeliac disease
  • Make dietary modification to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes

An Accredited Exercise Physiologist supports you to:

  • Understand how your body responds to exercise
  • Learn how to incorporate exercise into your life
  • Address barriers to exercise and empower you to move more
  • Improve your fitness, mobility, flexibility, strength, and balance
  • Improve your general health and wellbeing
  • Provide strategies to move more whether it be at home, in the park or at the gym
  • Understand how different types of exercise can impact your glucose levels

Group and one on one exercise options available.

Funding options

  • Diabetes SA members receive a discount on consultation fees. Become a Diabetes SA.
  • If you are referred to us with a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan, you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate (maximum of five allied health visits per calendar year).
  • Many private health funds allow you to claim for consultations with allied health professionals. This will vary depending on your level of cover, contact your health fund for details specific to you.
  • DVA Gold Card holders who are current Diabetes SA members and have a valid GP Care Plan are eligible for funded one-on-one appointments and group classes with no gap payment.
  • NDIS and home care packages may provide rebates for eligible people. Check with your relevant provider for further details.

A one-on-one initial assessment must be completed with the Exercise Physiologist (EP) prior to commencing group classes.

  • Non-Member: $35 or $15.20 (gap after $19.80 Medicare rebate)

Medicare subsidised appointments

Please note full fee payment is required at the time of the appointment. If paying with a debit card the Medicare rebate will be repaid straight into your bank account. If paying with credit or cash you will be provided with an invoice to claim the rebate from Medicare (online or at your local service centre). Rebate only available with a valid GP Chronic Condition Management Plan and if you still have one of your five allied health visits available at the time of your appointment.

Private health rebate

If you wish to claim a private health rebate, this can be claimed at the time of the appointment via HICAPS, please bring your private health card. Otherwise, you will be provided with an invoice to claim the rebate from your fund.
