Artist Profile - Milly Sumner

Melissa (Milly) Sumner is a Kaurna and Ngarrindjeri artist based in the southern suburbs of Adelaide. Her contemporary artwork explores deep connections to family, culture, community, nature and Country.

Milly began her artistic journey in 2020 under the mentorship of her aunty, quickly developing a distinctive style characterised by soft pastel tones and a preference for round canvases. Her work often reflects strong themes of family and connection, brought to life through her exploration of colour and tradition.

More recently, Milly has expanded her practice into mural projects and digital design, continuing to grow her creative skillset and artistic reach. She is also passionate about sharing her knowledge of Aboriginal art and culture, delivering workshops that build connection and understanding within her local community.

Milly’s work has been featured across a range of prominent venues and projects, including Seaford Secondary College, SALA Festival at Blackwood Library, Mitcham Library, Flinders Medical Centre, Torrens Connect, as well as uniform designs for the Southern Tigers NBL1 and Norwood Netball Club.

As part of our commitment to reconciliation, and in the development of our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), Diabetes SA commissioned Milly to create a bespoke artwork. This piece reflects the personal journeys of people living with diabetes, as well as the strength of the support, care and community that Diabetes SA provides.
