Diabetes SA Christmas Appeal 2025
At this time of year, many of us reflect on family, connection and the moments that matter most. For families living with diabetes, those moments often come with an extra layer of planning, care and courage.
Thomas was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 50 years ago. Back then, managing the condition was far more complicated than it is today. Every injection and meal was a careful calculation, made with limited information and basic tools. Over the years, he has faced fear and loss, including the heartbreak of losing his half-sister, Mary Veronica, to diabetes complications.
When Michelle was 25, she was backpacking through Europe and called her dad to say she was feeling constantly thirsty and tired. Thomas immediately recognised the signs and told her to go straight to hospital. She was admitted for a week. Despite his fear, Thomas knew Michelle would meet the challenge with determination and courage. Today, as a new mum, she manages her diabetes with extraordinary vigilance.
As Christmas approaches, Thomas and Michelle are looking forward to spending the day together as a family. Like many people with diabetes, they will enjoy the celebrations, share food and raise a glass, while carefully balancing insulin and blood sugar levels. It is a day to relax the rules a little, enjoy the treats, and be grateful for how far they have come.
Families like Thomas and Michelle’s remind us why our work at Diabetes SA is so important. Thanks to research, education and community support, people today are living longer, healthier lives with diabetes. But progress doesn’t stop here.
