Media Release – National Diabetes Week 9–5 July 2017

July 2017

DIABETES: HAVING REGULAR HEALTH CHECKS CAN PREVENT DIABETES RELATED COMPLICATIONS

National Diabetes Week (9 – 15 July) aims to raise awareness of diabetes.

There are more than 103,000 South Australians diagnosed with diabetes, yet many people remain uninformed about the importance of the annual cycle of care for optimal diabetes management.

During 2017 National Diabetes Week, Diabetes SA is launching a campaign to increase the awareness and greater understanding of diabetes in the community.

The 2017 National Diabetes Week campaign promotes the following key messages:

  • Know your risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
  • Have a health check and improve your understanding of what the numbers signify and how they relate to your diabetes management.
  • Looking after your diabetes is important for your long-term health and can reduce the risk of diabetes-related complications..

To support the campaign, the following resources are available:

Each year, Diabetes SA holds a seminar as part of National Diabetes Week. The theme for 2017 is Diabetes Behind Closed Doors, with expert speakers discussing diabetes-related complications related to continence, sexual health, and sleep problems. This seminar is free to all people registered with National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS) and takes place on Saturday 8 July 2017 at the Adelaide Convention Centre (bookings essential).
