Annual Diabetes SA Food and Health Seminar

A healthy gut – the facts on fibre

beansLet's spill the beans on fibre! This year's annual seminar features experts in the field of diet and the digestive system, and will provide you with an opportunity to learn about the benefits and impacts of dietary fibre for diabetes management.

Fibre is essential for proper functioning of the gut and has also been related to risk reduction for a number of chronic diseases, and for optimal diabetes management.

Diabetes SA would like to invite you to join us for an informative morning. Presenting will be:

Glenn Cardwell, Accredited Practising Dietitian with over 35 years' experience in clinical and public health nutrition. Glenn will discuss vegetables, grains and legumes, and explore the benefits of incorporating these foods into your diet, with a particular focus on diabetes.

Dr Trevor Lockett, CSIRO Research Scientist – translating research into practice. Trevor will have exciting information to share about how different types of fibre interact within the gut and the link with chronic disease.

The Diabetes SA team will then discuss and demonstrate how to prepare and incorporate more legumes and vegetables into your diet.

Diabetes SA – supporting and educating health professionals for better outcomes for our members

health-professionalsRecently Diabetes SA established a new role; 'NDSS Engagement Officer', with the purpose of educating health professionals about the benefits and services available under the NDSS and delivered by Diabetes SA.

A focus has been the education of GPs and Practice Nurses about the registration process, the recent changes to the NDSS, resources available for people living with diabetes and services available (particularly education programs) that GPs can refer people to.

We anticipate that by equipping health professionals with information about how best to support their patients who have been diagnosed with diabetes, that there will be better health outcomes in the long run.
