Caitlin's courage inspires many this Christmas

2017-christmas-appeal-change-caitlin-introCaitlin is one of 8,878 South Australians with type 1 diabetes, 578 of whom are aged 15 years or under.

Now 12, her surprise diagnosis when she was 9 was devastating to both her and her family. Her dad recalls: 'She said she didn't want diabetes, and cried. She cried about not wanting to treat it with needles and finger pricks, she was sad and upset.'

Type 1 diabetes, if left untreated, can be life-threatening.

Failing to manage the condition, even for a short time, can lead to devastating consequences, from vision loss, to organ failure.

It's why the education and support Diabetes SA provides is so important.

We help families to understand the importance and how to manage diabetes, and offer immediate support when needed.

Caitlin must test her blood glucose levels four times per day, and has an insulin pump attached to her torso, whereby the cannula must be changed every three days. It's a big responsibility on someone so young, but thanks to the guidance from Diabetes SA, it's one she handles well. 'It does get easier,' she says.

Caitlin loves to play footy, to run and swim. She also loves playing the piano. Her biggest fear is not being able to do the things she loves. With the right support, she will be able to continue to live her life and do the things she loves.
