Diabetes SA's Annual Food and Health Seminar — The Whole Picture

whole-pictureThis year’s annual seminar will be looking at ‘the whole picture’ of what we put into our bodies and what we can get out of our bodies.

We will feature an expert in the field of dietary sweeteners, provide you with an opportunity to learn about exercise and movement and consider the overall evidence for a range of dietary patterns in managing diabetes.

Diabetes SA would like to invite you to join us for an informative morning.

Our Guest Presenters will be:

Associate Professor Richard Young – a Senior Research Fellow within the Discipline of Medicine, University of Adelaide, based at the South Australian Health & Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI).

His research explores the effect of sweeteners on the gastrointestinal system and glucose absorption, assessing the overall impact on diabetes management. Associate Professor Richard Young will attempt to shed some light on the often asked question of ‘sweetener vs sugar’?

Thomas Pretlove – an Accredited Exercise Physiologist working at Adelaide Exercise Physiology for nearly 10 years, with prior experience at Hampstead Rehabilitation Centre. Thomas specialises in areas of diabetes management and prevention, musculoskeletal assessment and ongoing rehabilitation.

Thomas will discuss the benefits of exercise for people with diabetes and appropriate exercises to suit a range of mobility levels. How to motivate people to exercise, practical tips for exercising at home and referral pathways for people with chronic conditions.

Anissia Fairlie – Accredited Practising Dietitian working at Diabetes SA, with previous experience across private practice and aged care, working with a range of chronic conditions.

Anissia will be discussing the evidence for a range of dietary patterns that have been used in research to assist the management of diabetes. She will explore their commonalities and determine which dietary patterns are associated with the best health outcomes.
