The Diabetic Association of South Australia, known as Diabetes SA, is self funded and a recognised Public Benevolent Institution (PBI).

The name Diabetes South Australia and its “Living Diabetes SA” logo is a registered trademark.

Income is generated from membership subscriptions, traditional fund raising activities, retail operations and through Service Agreements.

The largest of these agreements is the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS) contract. The NDSS provides products and services needed for the self-management of diabetes at prices subsidised by the Australian Government.

Diabetes SA also maintains a close relationship with state government, service providers and other stakeholders in diabetes to ensure we maximise our influence on behalf of people with diabetes.

History

The Diabetic Association of South Australia Incorporated was established in the early 1950s with the purpose of supporting people with diabetes. The Association held its inaugural meeting on the 20th July 1953 and later incorporated under the Associations Incorporated Act on 21st May 1965. Whilst the Association is member based, its reach extends well beyond its supporting constituency to all people with diabetes.

As required under the Act, the Association is governed by a Board of Management and managed on a day to day basis by a Chief Executive Officer and staff.

The Board of Management is comprised of nine members. Four of these members form the Executive Committee, including the President, two Vice Presidents and a Treasurer. The remaining five positions are held by Committee Members. The Board of Management are required by constitution to be members of the Association.
