President's report

Peter-CrouchAs this is my first year as President I am delighted to take the opportunity to thank those who have recently left the Board and Diabetes SA.

Firstly, I thank out past President Bryan Fahy for his 16 years of dedicated service to Diabetes SA. His guidance and influence has at all times kept the organisation on the best possible pathway to continue giving excellent service to our members. Bryan will be sorely missed and on behalf of the current Board Members I extend our sincere thanks.

It would also be amiss of me not to mention our past CEO Jennifer Barber who recently served as an Executive Advisor to the Board and to our current CEO. Jenny has now retired from Diabetes SA after more than a quarter of a century of service. All Board Members that served with Jenny know of her passion for and dedication to Diabetes SA. She always looked for ways to improve what we do and I thank her on behalf of the Board and I wish her a long and happy retirement.

A number of challenges faced the Board in the financial year and to face those challenges we embarked on a Board recruitment process late last year. Through this detailed and professional process we welcomed Paul Kerin, Colin Butterick, Roslyn Hewlett and Allan Baird to the Board. These new members have the skills and expertise to ensure Diabetes SA is maintained as a worthwhile organisation that aims to make a positive difference to lives of people with diabetes in South Australia. I must also thank our CEO Angelique Pasalidis for her excellent work in this process along with Board Members Steve Fimmano, Monika Kruger and Geoff Weeks for their input.

With a refreshed Board we will now turn out attention to our strategic planning process in the later part of this year and as we work through the challenges that have faced the organisation with the removal of NDSS product supply, we will set about to redefine the core purpose of the Association bringing this back to a central focus – people with diabetes. I look forward to this process with a high level of enthusiasm.

I am also pleased to advise that the Board have approved an amount of $100,000 be allocated to Research from the annual audited surplus of $1,041,954. This is in line with last year’s donation of $100,000. The Board have a strong commitment to research and will make this a focus in our upcoming strategic planning process.

Finally, thank you to all of our loyal members and supporters for without you we would not exist. To the Board of Management, staff and volunteers I also say thank you for your dedication and commitment particularly through a year of significant change.

Peter Crouch, President
